In August 2025, Dr. Himburg was also awarded a 5-year $3.2 million NIH award as part of the mul琀椀-ins琀椀tu琀椀onal
P01 award “Mi琀椀gator Efficacies a昀琀er Realis琀椀c Improvised Nuclear Device (IND) Exposure: MERIE”. This is a
collabora琀椀ve effort led by Columbia University which houses a unique radia琀椀on source capable of simula琀椀ng
IND-specific exposures including fission-energy neutrons.
The Himburg lab has exper琀椀se and established
methodologies for the evalua琀椀on of delayed effects of
acute radia琀椀on exposure (DEARE) to the lung and kidney
and as part of the P01 project will leverage this exper琀椀se
to develop a mul琀椀-agent approach to mi琀椀gate acute and
delayed radia琀椀on syndromes following exposures
an琀椀cipated from the detona琀椀on of an improvised nuclear
device (IND). Broadly, this work will support the
transla琀椀onal goal of developing a comprehensive strategy
for diagnosis and treatment of radia琀椀on injuries in vic琀椀ms
of accidental radia琀椀on exposure.
Lab members Chris Malloy and Dana Veley conduct
analysis of radiation-induced lung toxicity endpoints.
